Working with the “My Lessons” menu

The “My Lessons” tab shows the number of prepaid hours for each student.

Getting reviews

After 14 days from the date of payment for the first lesson, each student will be notified via email and My Request section to leave a review for the tutor. If the student forgets to do so, feel free to remind him or her about it.

Working with «Find Students» section

In «Find Students» section we publish offers from students. You can fill up free time slots in your schedule by actively looking for new students.

Applying for the offer

To apply for the offer you need to write a message with your details and/or questions. To do this, select an offer you like and click «Show more» or click offer headline. Write your message and click «Send a message». After sending a message a new request will be created in «My requests» section on your profile, where you can continue a conversation with the student.

Limitations

We have following limitations in this section:

  • Tutor cannot apply to an offer until his profile completeness is above 70%. You can check your profile completeness at «Statistics» section.

  • Tutor with profile completeness 70% and average number of hours spend with student on the platform below or equal 3, can apply to up to 5 offers.

  • Tutor with profile completeness 70% and average number of hours spend with student on the platform above 3, can apply to unlimited number of offers.

Reporting an issue with the lesson

Sometimes you may face some unforeseen obstacles that do not allow your lesson to be carried out satisfactorily. This can include having some technical issues related to the lesson, being late or missing it either by student or you. In this case, we strongly recommend you to report this issue as soon as possible, so that we can take necessary actions in a timely manner.

Follow these steps to report the issue with your lesson:

  • Go to ‘My Lessons’ menu

  • Find your student and the lesson you’d like to report, click “Report Issue”.

  • Select the relevant issue with your lesson in the pop-up window, otherwise select “Other”. Write all available information in ‘Comment’ field.

  • Based on the option you choose, you will be recommended some of the immediate solutions available, otherwise, the issue will be forwarded to the support team.

Do I have to be a certified teacher?

No, our tutors are not required to be certified. Teaching experience is recommended and will increase your chances to attract students, but if you are simply passionate about teaching, you can still sign up as a tutor on Preply.

How much will I earn?

Your earnings depend on the hourly rate you set in the profile and how often you can provide lessons. If you have wide availability and your profile is appealing to students, they are likely to book more lessons and as a result, you will earn more.

Most popular tutors on Preply earn up to $550 weekly.

Preply takes a 100% commission fee of your first lesson payment with every new student. For all subsequent lessons, the commission varies from 33 to 18% and depends on the number of completed lesson hours with students. The more tutoring you do through Preply, the less commission you pay.

Commission fees are used by Preply to ensure a stable user-base of students, take care of transferring payments to tutors’ accounts, provide constant customer support, and create website features that add value to your lessons.

What is the payment scheme?

If you’re happy with the first lesson, and the student wants to continue taking lessons with you, he or she will prepay your classes through the platform, choosing one of the packages available: 5, 10, 15 or 20 hours. The more hours the student chooses, the greater the discount is for the student.

Crediting funds to tutor’s internal account

Preply credits funds for the lessons to the tutor’s internal account. In order to receive payment for the lesson, it has to be scheduled in the “Calendar” section. After the lesson is over, we will send the student a request for its confirmation. In case the student has the auto-confirmation option turned on, the lesson will be confirmed 72 hours after the lesson completion time (or 72 hours after lesson is added to Calendar for the lesson that happened in the past). This feature does not apply to first lessons with students. In the case of any fraudulent activity, access to the account balance and the profile of the tutor will be immediately blocked.

Withdrawals from an account

To withdraw from your account, you can use the «Withdrawals» section, which will open the popup with possible payout options. You can withdraw funds from the internal account in the following ways:

  • Direct transfer to Prepaid MasterCard® from Payoneer

  • PayPal

  • Skrill

Penalties

For unscrupulous tutors who try to bypass the system of package lessons, penalties and ultimately removed from the platform might be applied.

Formation of tutor rating

Your position in the search results is the main factor determining your success on the platform. According to our statistics, more than 50% of all requests are received by tutors who are displayed on the first page of the search results. Since the launch of the platform, some of our tutors who were in the top of the search results had to double prices of their lessons, because they were overwhelmed by the number of interested students.

Online ESL Teacher Interview Process & Tips

Create a tutor’s profile

By sending the application to become a teacher on Preply, you confirm that you have read and accepted the rules of our website. After entering basic information, your profile will be saved, but not yet available in the search results for the students. You will be able to add your video introduction and information about your work hours later. Then, your profile will be sent for approval and verification by the tutors’ approval team. Due to the high volume of tutor applications that Preply receives, only accepted teachers will hear back from us.

Approval of tutor’s profile

Preply will manually verify and approve each tutor’s profile. During the verification process, we pay close attention to the level of profile completeness, as well as assess the quality and qualifications of each tutor. In accordance with site rules, it is prohibited to mention any contact information in the profile description fields (full name, address, phone number and other contact details). We reserve the right not to approve a tutor profile without explanation.

Interaction with students

When a student finds a suitable tutor for his/her requirements and budget, the student pays for the first lesson through the platform. The more relevant information that is stated in the tutor’s profile, including work hours and video introduction, the higher the chances are that the tutor will get the student that fits his/her specializations and timings.

Clarifying the details

The tutor and student can use the private messaging system on the platform in order to clarify the details of future lessons. Site rules do not allow the student and tutor to disclose names, contact information or social media accounts in private messages until the student pays for his/her first lesson. If the system blocks the messaging by mistake during correspondence with the student, please contact our technical support.

After the payment for the first lesson, the system will automatically exchange contact information between the student and the tutor. In the first lesson, the student evaluates the methods and quality of the tutoring.

When will I hear back from Preply?

Due to the high volume of tutor applications that Preply receives, only accepted teachers will hear back from us. Please note that profiles without a real photo or video will not pass the selection process. Preply does not send rejection letters.
